My boys still talk about how the surfed with turtles and had whales jump out of the water 150 yards behind us.  A time we will all remember.

I hear the North Shore is known for its huge waves. Is it safe for a beginner to learn to surf?

The North Shore has surf year round for every ability level. Feel confident that with Doug’s 30 years experience he will  teach you on the waves that match your ability level to insure you have  a fun and safe experience.

How do I know my instructor is qualified to teach me?

Doug is your personal surf instructor. He is a fully licensed surf instructor , certified in the State of Hawaii as a lifeguard with current First Aid, CPR, big Wave Tow In and ocean rescue certifications.

What are the benefits of smaller group surf lessons vs. larger group surf lessons?

As in any sport instruction, the smaller the group, the more one on one attention you receive. In surfing, the end result is the more waves you ride the faster you learn.

I have surfed  before but am unsure of the conditions in Hawaiian waters. What do you suggest?

Doug can be your personal surf tourguide on the North Shore. Visit our Surf Tour page for complete information.

Any training tips you suggest before I take a surfing lesson?

Two of the more basic maneuvers you can work on are push-ups and squats. Both of these will help you get to your feet easier and faster. Swimming is the key for endurance in paddling.

Doug is an encyclopedia of surfing…so feel  free to contact him with any other questions you may have.
